The critics went wild over Jaden Smith in 2006 when he starred opposite his dad, Will Smith in the tearjerker & true life story of one man's rise from living on the streets to prosperity in the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. The movie, caught fire, due, in part to the young Jaden, earning him praise for his ability to become the character he was protraying.
Today, 2010, the very same child actor is catching flack from some of the very same folks who held him and his work in such high regard 4 years ago. So, what has changed? How did Jaden Smith go from "cute" to "brat" in a mere 4 years? An online entertainment magazine article attempted to explain away this people mentality against the young actor by blaming it on the fact that he is a privileged kid. And that he is somehow disrespectful toward his elders, more specifically, that his appearance on David Letterman, at times, placed the seasoned talk show host in uncomfortable situations during their interview where Jaden appeared over confident, brassy and arrogant.

Needless to say, after reading these comments, I saw the trailer of the Letterman interview and found these and other character attacks on the young man to be groundless, fruitless and unjust. Jaden Smith is obviously spoiled and yes, he is definitely a bit of a smart -aleck kid, but, what 12 year old kid is not? What is really going on here? Are people actually jealous of Jaden's success? Do they think that he is getting these juicy roles because of who his parents are and not solely due to his ability to carry a film?
Are people hating for the sake of hating? I think they are. OK, Jaden's folks have different methods of raising their children. They obviously give them amenities that many of us can never afford to give our own children. Looking at the bigger picture, however, this writer took notes on the positives that is happening in this family dynamics.These children are learning at an early age to be themselves. Face their fears and work hard for what they want to achieve in life. Their only drawback? They have to live and learn how to be children under the microscope of an oftentimes fickle public.
I see Jaden and his siblings being raised right. I say, Jaden is a kid and he is a smarty pants. I think he could make a heck of a comedian if he chose that route on his journey to finding "Jaden." His timing is perfect, witty responses spot on and slight sarcasm, sweet. But, he is only a kid still. He needs time to grow,as we all had to do.
Karate Kid is another step in the right acting direction for Jaden Smith. I cannot wait to see what his next project will be. By the way. Jaden's brother Trey is a baaad footballer, his sister, Willow, a budding lil actress, his mom, recently posed naked inside the pages of Essence Magazine and his dad? Well, Will Smith is "Will Smith."
