You may not think that you can't get your hands on the KFC original recipe, especially if you saw the same news piece that my husband caught on television yesterday. The quick blurb he watched showed a man in an overcoat, carrying a steel briefcase, which was handcuffed to his wrist. In it . . . the top secret recipe! Apparently, it had to be moved to a new location under strict security.
Now, I really should add that it was my husband's understanding that the briefcase contained the actual "original" recipe written by Col. Sanders, which was what made the whole ordeal newsworthy. What this meant to me was that the authentic recipe could be available to the public, but not so easily found. I got to thinking about it, and how much we could save making this chicken at home - the same chicken we both have been eating all of our lives, but only if we could afford to eat out. Unfortunately, like a lot of Americans, we have cut back on dining out more recently, so gaining access to this, and perhaps other authentic restaurant recipes like this one, would be invaluable.
Recip Saw
Wouldn't you know it (and this is a true story), the day after my husband saw this news piece, I got an e-mail from a new colleague, who ended up telling me that there was a cookbook that had, not only the KFC original recipe in it, but hundreds of others, too. This was great news to me, because while I cook all the time at home, I'm one of those who can use all the help she can get in the kitchen. I looked into it myself and sure enough I found the very cookbook I had been told about.
My husband and I enjoy trying new recipes to keep our homemade meals interesting, almost as much as we like our favorite restaurant meals, so now we can have the best of both worlds at our fingertips.
Ingredients
* 2 cups flour
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon thyme
* 1/2 teaspoon basil
* 1/2 teaspoon oregano
* 1 tablespoon celery salt
* 1 tablespoon black pepper
* 1 tablespoon dry mustard
* 4 tablespoons paprika
* 2 teaspoons garlic salt
* 1 teaspoon ground ginger
* 3 tablespoons msg (Accent)
* 6 eggs, beaten
* 2 cups breadcrumbs
* 2 chicken, cut up
* oil, for basting
Directions
1. Mix all dry ingredients, except breadcrumbs, well in a large bowl.
2. Dip chicken pieces in beaten eggs.
3. Then turn them over in regular bread crumbs.
4. Finally plunge them in the flour-spices mixture.
5. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
6. Place chicken in a tray and cover with foil (shiny side out).
7. Cook 40 minutes.
8. Remove the foil then cook for another 40 minutes.
9. Baste lightly with oil 5 minutes before the end.
10. Let stand 5 minutes and serve.
