How to Build Dollhouses

Dollhouses date back to the seventeenth century when they were first used to captivate children particularly those of the privileged people in the society. Since then, they have been adorned with many furnishings that attract even more children as well as adults. While the dollhouse was a preserve of affluent people in the past, today it is easy for a family to design their own dollhouse and adorn it with appealing features that fascinate children and adults alike. Building a dollhouse involves number of steps, which have to be followed critically.

Recip Saw

The first step involves making a decision on how the dollhouse will be used. Under this, the dollhouse can be built as an arena for children's amusement or as a cherished miniature collection. Making a sound decision on the function of the dollhouse will determine how the actual dollhouse will look like. The second step involves deciding on a scale for the dollhouse. Most miniatures have features on a scale of 1/12 i.e. an inch per foot. On the other hand, a dollhouse can also be as tall as 15 inches in height.

Recip Saw

After deciding on an appropriate scale, the next step is to select a desired size and structure of the dollhouse. The dollhouse can be a simple one-room and one-storey cottage or a multi-storey structure with techniques sourced from a wide range of cultures and skills such as gingerbread and Venetian palazzo.

Once a decision on the desired structure is arrived at, the building process has to begin slowly unless one is a qualified carpenter. This involves gathering the required materials such as paper, a ruler and a pencil to draw the required pattern. If one is building a simple dollhouse, at least six pieces of wood will be required for making the base, the roof, and three walls. One side of the dollhouse is left without a wall to facilitate play and allow room for display. Holes should be marked on the wall pieces to create space for a door and windows. Plywood can be used for making the base since it is strong and will make a firm base.

The pieces of wood are cut using a saw to ensure that they come out as required. A circular saw can be more efficient and will save time in this activity. The door and window spaces have to be cut carefully, and drilled holes will ensure that the pieces of wood are joined fittingly. Using a drill to bore holes for the dollhouse joints will also save much time. The edges of the cut pieces of wood have to be smoothed using sandpaper. Thereafter, the wall pieces have to be joined carefully using nails and glue in order to create a strong structure. The same applies to the fittings of the roof and the base. Any nail pieces that remain protruding from wood surfaces have to be sanded in order to guarantee safety of the dollhouse surfaces. The result is an outstanding structure that can be adorned with a variety of dolls and other furnishings.
